Sandy Cheyne

About the artists

SANDY CHEYNE ARRIVED IN WEST BERLIN IN 1982 TO CONTINUE WITH HIS CAREER AS AN ARTIST COMMENCED IN ABERDEEN, SCOTLAND MANY YEARS EARLIER. SEVEN YEARS LATER ON 9TH, NOVEMBER 1989 THE BERLIN WALL WAS OPENED AND SANDY WAS TO FIND HIMSELF RECORDING THE EVENT IN HIS SKETCHBOOK. THE ARTIST SUDDENLY FOUND 1989 “THE MOST EXCITING PERIOD OF MY LIFE” FOR DURING THIS TIME BERLIN WAS TRANSFORMED FROM AN “ISLAND CITY” SURROUNDED BY A TOTALITARIAN STATE TO A BUSTLING POLITICAL, SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL CENTRE AT THE CENTRE OF EUROPE. SANDY LIVED IN BERLIN FOR A FURTHER 14 YEARS AFTER RE-UNIFICATION. THE SCENES THE ARTIST DEPICTS IN HIS PAINTINGS FROM THAT EXCITING PERIOD EMBODY THE HUGE CHANGES THAT TOOK PLACE. THIS EXHIBITION PROVIDES US WITH A BERLINER’S INSIGHT INTO AN ERA THAT MANY OF US SAW ONLY FROM AFAR. THIS SOLO EXHIBITION IS ONE OF MANY CELEBRATIONS, POLITICAL VENUES, AND EXHIBITIONS OCCURRING IN EUROPE THROUGHOUT NOVEMBER HIGHLIGHTING THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS HISTORICAL EVENT IN BERLIN.
